Grade 1 - Addition( 0 - 9)

Addition to Grade 1 can be taught using the fingers or using the line to represent each number.

1.Using Fingers to add numbers.

Example: Add following digits

                                      2
                                 +   4

                              ______

Step1:First let the student count 2 fingers as the first digit to add is 2.

Step2:Now let the student count 4 more fingers starting just after the counting ended for the first digit. And ask him to remember the finger where the count ended.

Step3:Now let the student count all the fingers starting from the first finger and the last finger where the counting ended for the second digit. The Total count is the answer.

Now, answer can be written for the above example.

                                      2
                                 +   4
                              ______
                                     6
                              ______

2.Using Small Lines to add numbers.

Taking the sample example

                                       2

                                 +   4
                              ______
                                     6
                              ______

Step1:  Here we will marking lines for each digit depending upon the value it represents.
Here first digit is 2. Draw two lines for the first digit.

Step2: Now, also mark lines for the second digit alongside the lines marked for the first digit. here, 4 lines are to marked for the second.

Step3: Let the student count the total number of lines and hence the answer.
